Maheshwar, Mandu & Omkareshwar
This fascinating experience shows you some of the unique features of Madhya-Pradesh; the beautiful city of Maheshwar, the “city of pleasures” Mandu and the Hindu pilgrimage destination Omkareshwar. You are received at the airport of Indore and driven directly to Maheshwar on the north bank of the Narmada River. The name of the city means “Great God” and is said to be the Mahishmati, capital of King Arjuna, mentioned in the Mahabharata epic. Maheshwar has been famous for textile since the 5th century and is known as a centre for weaving colourful saris. On the second day, an exciting excursion to Mandu and Omkareshwar awaits you. Mandu is located at 630 meters altitude in the Vindhya Mountains and is a ruin-city. There are many beautiful buildings, including the Jaz Mahal and the Nilkanth Sanctuary. Mandu inspired the Shah Jahan during the construction of the world wonder Taj Mahal in Agra. You can marvel at the temple complex/pilgrimage destination Omkareshwar much; the river island carries temples, palaces and statues. The following day brings you a lot of rest and relaxation; we will arrange a village walk for you, where you can also visit the weaving mill. As a good ending, you will have a boat trip at sunset, where you can drink a tea, watch the birds and enjoy nature.
Day 1 – Arrival in Indore & Drive to Maheshwar
On this day the fascinating itinerary begins. You will be picked up at the airport of the city Indore and then taken directly to the “City of Delights” Maheshwar. The city name means “Great God”. The beautiful Ahilya Fort Hotel awaits you. Located above the sacred Narmada River, the rooms of the Ahilya Fort are among the four buildings of the 18th century. Each room is unique, overlooking the river or the organic garden. You can walk through shady courtyards, flowering gardens or swim in the pool, which is bordering the fortress walls. The original complex (Ahilya Wada) was built in the Holkar dynasty by the honoured Queen Ahilyabai-Holkar.
Day 2 – Maheshwar – Excursion to Mandu & Omkareshwar
After breakfast, you will do an excursion, with the first destination: the ruin city of Mandu (“City of Delight”) on the Vindhya Mountains, which is dominated by some imperial mausoleums with the typical onion domes. The town inspired the construction of the Taj Mahal in Agra. After arrival, you will do a sightseeing tour including the Jami Masjid Mosque, the Jahaz Mahal, the tomb of Shah Hoshang, the Hindola Mahal, the Nilkanth Mahal and the Rani Roopmati Pavilion. Later you head to the pilgrimage site and temple complex: Omkarehswar. Due to the rare feature of the Hindu god Shiva, one of the twelve “Jyotirlingas” in the world is the main reason why pilgrims come here every year. The entire place is located on a river island in the Narmada; the pilgrimage routes drag through her. Even here you will visit many temples, including Mamleshwar Temple, Omkareshwar Temple, the Parikrama, the Ahilya Ghat and the colourful 25m high Shiva statue. Then drive back to the hotel, where you can rest.
Day 3 – Maheshwar – Village walk & Boatride
This day is started a bit peaceful. You can have breakfast and enjoy. The hotel offers the opportunity to swim in the pool between green plants and fascinating butterflies. If you feel like, you can take a nice village walk in Maheshwar. The walk will take you past the banks of the river and show a wild patchwork of paint on the “laundry day”. Also a visit to the Ahilya School. It was started by the Prince of Holkar 25 years ago. The school also offers guests the opportunity to promote the education of a child. You can also visit the “Rehwa Society”, a place for weaving, where artisans create the world famous Maheshwari textiles. Surely you will find something to take as a souvenir. In the evening we arranged a boat trip. Savour this beautiful experience in the traditional wooden boat, while relaxing with a cup of tea, watching colourful birds and the sunset at Baneshwar Temple.
